Jon Santos received his BFA from the California College of Arts in 2000. He is
adjunct professor at Pratt Institute and principal of Common Space, a
multidisciplinary design and art studio based in New York City. Santos’ single
channel video “Arnel Pineda, On and On and On and On” explores the residue of
colonialism throughout pop culture. Steve Perry in 2006 stepped down as lead
singer of the band Journey to be replaced several times until the discovery of
Arnel Pineda on YouTube, who at the time was the front man of a Manila based
cover group. Deconstructing still images of Arnel Pineda and Steve Perry, Santos
explores the relationship between industrial world authorship and developing world
mimesis, displacing the original and its copy. Santos’ father, a drummer for a
house rock band, performed for American GIs during the Vietnam war and is
currently the proprietor of The Royal Kubo, a Filipino karaoke bar located in his
home town of Detroit, MI.
