Yuko Sueta, age 36, is battling metastasized breast cancer. She currently has an intense pain condition as a result of spinal compression that has her bed-ridden and unable to work. She has undergone procedures to try to alleviate some of the compression and she is fighting hard to rebuild her strength.
We are asking for your help in raising money to assist her with her living expenses and also to develop a fund that would allow her to explore alternative and holistic treatment options.
There will be both a silent and live art auction and the RAFFLE for the evening includes items such as dinners from Natori and Piano’s, Anthology Film Archives memberships, gift certificates from Kinokuniya Books, Sephora, a haircut from Commune and more. MC by lovely Viva Ruiz with Max Fish’s one and only Dan Graff. Live music by Keith Connolly from No Neck Blues Band and special guests.

Bayt Keshkha presents
Goth Gulf Visual Vortex GGVV
Tuesday 31 March 2009 6pm - 9pm

A group show curated by Khalid Al Gharaballi and Fatima Al Qadari,”Goth Gulf Visual Vortex GGVV” explores the late arrival of the goth subculture to Kuwait in the early 2000’s. Having gone through the filters of third world cyber aesthetics, MTV pop goth videos and trashy Kuwaiti fashion trends, the subculture, ultimately, came out “wrong”; it had a distinctly cheesy, local manifestation. Arabic pop music and poetry’s predilection towards sadness and solitude added a sense of familiarity to the genre. Garnering the interest of local “Noir Journalism,” tabloids devoted exclusively to “exposing” the occult, goth kids were automatically branded as Satan worshippers. In juxtaposition, the show addresses dark aspects of Kuwaiti culture such as the practices of black magic, zeeran (excorcism rituals) and the Muslim belief in jinn (demonic spirits), as well as the haunting destruction left behind after the invasion in 1990-91.
A group show featuring the work of Fatima Al Qadiri, Khalid Al Gharaballi, Tareq Al Sultan and Jana Alnaqeeb, Monira Al Qadiri, Bassem Mansour, Jon Santos, David Toro and Solomon Chase.

John Mendez and I have hundreds of things in common: phonograph records. Mostly from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin, Brighton, etc. These days, John is working as a visual artist and records music using a few monikers I cannot keep track of.
In 2008, John was nice enough to contribute soundtrack music to Common Space to be featured in some short videos we created for Gallery Yvon Lambert and Steven Alan/ Urban Outfitters. More recently, John contributed “The Cloak” for a showreel that we cut together for Createthe Group, featured on their home page.
John’s work adds a dimension to these works that is cerebral, timeless and captivating- beyond most devices used to value product in a commercial setting. These tracks were produced without any thought that they might be used in such a way and for that we can’t thank him enough.

The Houndstooth Dogtent was designed for an annual design/build camping trip hosted by the apparel brand F.S.C., which asked participating campers to create a “primitive luxury good” that would “take the ‘rough’ out of ‘roughing it’.”

The Showpackage has been out doing it’s thing for the past few weeks. We are happy with the way this collaboration worked out. A lot of time and effort put in from a lot of people. Common Space gives special thanks to Andrea Huelse and Nicholas Grasa, with respect to the uncompromising direction of Paul Rowland.

In more ways than one, Alex Kopps has been a long time collaborator with Common Space. A studio visit today in Oakland, CA has revealed more than a few interesting projects including this how to stepbystep film which explains how to build your own stop frame (video source) animation rig.

Peter Simensky contributed to Resurrection, a publication put together by Common Space which asked participants to bring something back from the dead. Peter presented bills from his Neutral Capital Collection and has some work currently on view underground, in the basement of the Sculpture Center in Long Island City.
“Peter Simensky’s installation places divination rods within the lower level gallery space. The forms of these rods are based on the artist’s research into the use of divining mediums. Simensky will use this knowledge to trace the space of SculptureCenter’s basement, searching for objects of value hidden below the floor. Simensky’s piece explores how artistic gestures create potential value, and how these sets of relations might find a form of translation within objects that combine the functional, the decorative, and the symbolic.”
